The Western Stage’s SpringFEST is an annual, pre-season series of performance and production projects for students and community members, designed to provide instruction and to  improve technical and performance skills.

Season 2019's theme is "Quest" - the journeys, the pursuits, and the missions we embark upon, searching for something beyond ourselves. It highlights some of the people who have defied odds, found courage when they had none, and who broke incredible barriers. It is about quests chosen and those luring us forward. It is about the human desire to seek out and obtain what we hold most dear: truth, justice, knowledge, love, meaning.

Feb 8 & 9  "Celebration '69"  Studio Theater, Conceived and presented by Mark Shilstone-Laurant
2019 marks the Golden Anniversary of 1969, the single most amazing year of the 20th century. CELEBRATION ’69 is a multimedia presentation that tries to capture the essence of that crazy year through a combination of images from the times, a live band playing music released in 1969, and colorful narration. CELEBRATION ’69 focuses on six iconic events from 1969: Nixon becomes president, man walks on the moon, Charles Manson masterminds a series of gruesome murders, The Woodstock Music Festival plays to half a million blissful hipsters, the Beatles record Abbey Road, their final album, and the peace and love sixties die a miserable death at a Rolling Stones concert outside the Altamont Speedway in northern California. As well as a live band playing tunes from the year on stage, CELEBRATION ’69 also looks at the explosion of music that occurred that year - debut albums from Led Zeppelin, Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Allman Brothers, Janis Joplin, Elton John, Chicago, Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five, and, believe it or not, that’s just a partial list!

"Just Like Us" By Karen Zacarías, Directed by Nina Capriola

 “What makes us American?”

Based on Helen Thorpe’s bestselling book, this documentary-style play follows four Latina teenage girls in Denver—two of whom are documented and two who are not—through young adulthood. Their close-knit friendships begin to unravel when immigration status dictates the girls’ opportunities, or lack thereof. When a political firestorm arises, each girl’s future becomes increasingly complicated. Just Like Us poses difficult, yet essential questions about what makes us American.

ABOUT 2X4 BASH: THEATRE ON THE EDGE 2X4 BASH: Theatre on the Edge, a theatre arts program for burgeoning artists between the ages of 18-29, was created in 2011 by The Western Stage’s Artistic Director, Jon Selover. The program provides an opportunity for the next generation of theatre artists to collaborate, innovate, and educate through provocative contemporary works. We challenge artists and audiences alike to approach theatre from new perspectives and invite all to connect their own life experience with the work.
"The Flick" By Annie Baker, Directed by Mark Englehorn

In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world..

Men on Boats By Jaclyn Backhaus
Studio Theater | Oct. 26, 27, Nov. 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10

Spinning historical, theatrical, and gender conventions on their heads, this subversive tale of 10 men, four boats, and two rivers contains none of the above. Pack your gear for the true(ish) history of 19th-century American explorer and one-armed Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell, who assembles a brawny band of soldiers, trappers, and adventurers to explore the waterways of the American West. Inspired by Powell’s actual travel log from 1869. Laugh-out-loud theater, performed by a diverse cast of not-men who infuse America’s historic myths of male conquest with a sly blast of subtext.
