"of Mice & Men" a musical adaptation
May 4, 5, 6
The Western Stage & The National Steinbeck Center present a rare musical adaptation of Steinbeck’s "Of Mice & Men," by Ira Bilowit; a work that had Steinbeck's earnest support throughout its creation and premiered on Broadway in 1958. Despite positive reviews, a newspaper strike hit New York City, preventing the production from building up an audience, and was forced to close. The work has been archived for 60 years.

In partnership with The National Steinbeck Center, which recently acquired a treasure trove of original scripts, scores, and photos from the 1958 NYC debut, The Western Stage was given permission by the Steinbeck family estate to re-introduce the public to this little-known work. The hope is that TWS will be able to present a full-scale production of this resurrected masterpiece in the near future.
Free Admission
The reading will be presented as a FREE event for the community in conjunction with the NSC’s Steinbeck Festival).    Just one performance will be held in Hartnell’s 500-seat Mainstage Theater on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.

General seating is on a first-come basis. This event is wheelchair accessible. Individuals requiring sign-language interpreters, real-time captioners, or other accommodations should contact Melissa Chin-Parker at (831)770-7088 or [email protected] a week prior to the event.

"Just Like Us" By Karen Zacarías, Directed by Nina Capriola

 “What makes us American?”

Based on Helen Thorpe’s bestselling book, this documentary-style play follows four Latina teenage girls in Denver—two of whom are documented and two who are not—through young adulthood. Their close-knit friendships begin to unravel when immigration status dictates the girls’ opportunities, or lack thereof. When a political firestorm arises, each girl’s future becomes increasingly complicated. Just Like Us poses difficult, yet essential questions about what makes us American.

ABOUT 2X4 BASH: THEATRE ON THE EDGE 2X4 BASH: Theatre on the Edge, a theatre arts program for burgeoning artists between the ages of 18-29, was created in 2011 by The Western Stage’s Artistic Director, Jon Selover. The program provides an opportunity for the next generation of theatre artists to collaborate, innovate, and educate through provocative contemporary works. We challenge artists and audiences alike to approach theatre from new perspectives and invite all to connect their own life experience with the work.
"The Flick" By Annie Baker, Directed by Mark Englehorn

In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world..

Runs: July 27th-August 18th (July 27th, 28th; August 3rd, 4th, 17th, 18th – 6 performances total)

It Can’t Happen Here

June 2 - 23
Can’t Happen Here"By Tony Taccone and Bennett S. Cohen, Based Upon the Novel by Sinclair Lewis

More relevant than ever before.

Lewis’ tale keeps insinuating itself into our lives because of its insight into American politics. It tells of the ascent of a demagogue who becomes president of the United States by promising to return the country to greatness. Sound familiar? A frightening reminder of just how fragile democracies really are.

"The Secret Garden"

Jun 23 - Jul 14
The Secret Garden,  Book and Lyrics by Marsha Norman, Music by Lucy Simon,  Western Stage MAINSTAGE

An enchanting musical, based on a beloved Victorian children’s story, with a soaring musical score, this is the story of ten-year-old orphan Mary Lennox, who is sent off to the Yorkshire Highlands to live with reclusive, long-suffering relatives she has never met. Mary’s feisty and determined spirit peels away the gloomy sadness that surrounds her uncles and invalid cousin showing us the power that “one small girl” can have when she “wants things to grow.”

Hair

 Aug 11 - Sep 1
'Hair" Aug 11 - Sep 1 Book and Lyrics by Gerome Ragni & James Rado, Music by Galt MacDermot Western Stage MAINSTAGE

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the show that changed everything

Hair is more than just a musical: it is a social and cultural phenomenon, a jubilant assertion of life and freedom and a cry of protest.  The show was born out of protest, but its spirit is one of affirmation.  Hair brought counter-cultural values to a mass audience and helped loosen up a whole generation.

Legacy of Light

Oct 27 - Nov 11
"Legacy of Light" By Karen Zacarias Western Stage STUDIO THEATRE

An intellectual joyride confronting a universal question

Two women scientists, living hundreds of years apart, explore the meaning of love, motherhood, family, art and science in this contemporary comedy. Legacy of Light juxtaposes the story of an 18th Century mathematician and scientist, who became unexpectedly pregnant at 42, and that of a 21st-century physicist desperately trying to conceive a child.  Legacy of Light, equates the laws of physical science with human love and uses magical realism in some dreamlike moments to draw together serendipitous stories.

The Drowsy Chaperone

Nov 10 - Dec 8
The Drowsy Chaperone,  Music & Lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, Book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar
Western Stage  MAINSTAGE MUSICAL, Nov 17 {GALA}
Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score,

Hilarious Musical Farce

A loving send-up of the frivolously inconsequential stage musicals of the Jazz Age, a fan known only as Man in Chair gives a spin to the original cast recording of one such musical.  The recording comes to life. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight. A bona fide madcap escapist American musical comedy.
